Agriculture in the region

1.9% Agriculture in the region suffers from slow growth in productivity. The annual rate of growth of total productivity in the region grew only 1.9 percent between 1961 and 2007 compared with 2.4 percent in OECD countries. In the countries of Central America and the Caribbean, where limited land availability is a key determinant of production expansion, the rate of growth is even lower: 1.1% for the same period.

Agricultural Production

80%Agricultural production in the region will have to grow by 80%between 2007 and 2050 to meet an expected increase of more than 35% in the population in the same period.

The poor in the region spend between 50% and 80% of their incomes on food.

Rural Population

2/3 Almost two-thirds of the total rural population in the region still live in poverty
